The activities of the “Dhofar Khareef 2026” season have officially kicked off in the south of the Sultanate of Oman, reaffirming the governorate’s status as the region’s premier natural tourism haven. It offers visitors an ideal escape from the scorching summer heat into a refreshing climate, with temperatures ranging between 20°C and 27°C. With the start of the season, the plains and mountains have begun dressing in a lush green carpet, while water springs and waterfalls flow amidst a magical, misty atmosphere—making it the preferred destination for families, relaxation seekers, and adventure enthusiasts alike.

Statistical indicators released by the relevant authorities show a remarkable upward trend in seasonal attendance year after year, reflecting the great confidence Dhofar is gaining as a leading summer destination. The number of visitors jumped from 962,196 in 2023 to 1,047,751 in 2024, representing a growth rate of about 9%. The season continued its tourism leaps, attracting 1,070,738 visitors in 2025.

Calendar of Events and Entertainment Destinations for 2026

This year’s season (running from June 21 until the end of September 2026) features an integrated package of entertainment and cultural activities and initiatives spread across several key locations:

    • Ateen Square: The season’s most prominent entertainment hub, hosting artistic performances, family activities, shopping experiences, and restaurants.
    • “Return of the Past” Event: A cultural journey that takes visitors back to the fragrant history and heritage of Oman through folk arts, traditional crafts, and heritage markets.
    • Frankincense Market: A dedicated site showcasing products derived from the famous Dhofari frankincense and traditional industries associated with it as a historical symbol of the region.
    • Child’s Time (Awqad Park): An integrated entertainment and educational zone offering interactive games and live shows dedicated to children in a safe environment.

    Natural Attractions Worth Discovering

The governorate boasts a unique environmental diversity that combines valleys, beaches, and mountain peaks:

    • Valleys and Springs: “Wadi Darbat” stands out with its seasonal lakes and waterfalls, alongside Wadi Naheez. Water flows abundantly in famous springs such as Ayn Razat, Jarziz, Sahalnoot, Athum, and Hamran.
    • Pristine Beaches: Stretching along the Arabian Sea coast, the most prominent include Al Mughsail Beach (known for its natural blowholes and Marneef Cave), and the beaches of Al Fizayah, Al Dahariz, and Mirbat.
    • Mountain Highlands: Jabal Samhan (a natural reserve) and the Ateen mountain and plain offer breathtaking panoramic views amidst dense fog.

Authentic Flavors and the Scent of “White Gold”

The Dhofar Khareef experience is incomplete without exploring its historical legacy embodied in Dhofari frankincense (White Gold), whose caravans once traveled to the civilizations of the Pharaohs, the Romans, and the Far East.

Dhofari cuisine also represents a cornerstone of hospitality. Visitors are keen to taste the famous “Madhbi” (meat grilled on hot stones in the Ateen plain) and the traditional “Maajeen” dish, in addition to enjoying fresh coconut water (Nargil) at the stalls scattered among the green orchards in Al Dahariz.

Travel Facilities and Access for Regional Travelers

Airlines have significantly boosted operations to connect the governorate with neighboring countries, particularly the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia:

Notice for Travelers: Saudia and Flynas provide direct flights from Riyadh and Jeddah to Salalah Airport, with more than 6 flights per week. Additionally, Salalah Airport is connected to Muscat Airport via frequent domestic flights lasting no more than 90 minutes.

    General Tips for Visitors:

The period from mid-July to the end of September is the best time to enjoy the greenery and waterfalls. By mid-September, the “Sarb” (spring) season begins, where the fog gradually clears, revealing stunning landscapes with high clarity and low humidity—making it an ideal time for photography lovers and serenity seekers. Visitors are advised to bring light, waterproof clothing and to use local guides for smooth and comfortable commuting.
