The WAJ Founder Story: How Assem Ammar Is Building an Operating System for MENA’s Service Businesses - founder story

Walk into a busy salon in Dubai or a clinic in Amman and you will often find the same quiet chaos behind the front desk: appointments booked in one app, client records scattered across a notebook and a phone, payments run through a separate machine, and follow-up messages typed out by hand. For years, the businesses that keep the region’s beauty, wellness and healthcare sectors running have been stitching their day together with tools that were never built to work together. WAJ exists to end that. Founded by Assem Ammar, WAJ is an AI-powered operating system that unifies everything a service business needs to run  from bookings and payments to a full customer relationship management (CRM) system and today it powers more than 500 salons, spas, barbershops and clinics across the Middle East and North Africa.

This is the story of how it came to be.

    An operator’s problem, not a spreadsheet’s

Assem Ammar did not arrive at WAJ as an outsider looking for a market

He arrived as an engineer and data scientist who had spent more than a decade inside the region’s most demanding technology and service companies  building and scaling products at names like Etisalat, Talabat and MaxAB. That path matters, because it gave him two things at once: the technical depth to build serious software, and a front-row seat to how service businesses in MENA actually operate on the ground.

What he kept seeing was a mismatch. The software these businesses relied on was fragmented and foreign  a booking tool from one vendor, a payment system from another, customer data trapped somewhere else entirely. It assumed payment methods, working weeks and customer habits that did not match how businesses in Riyadh, Amman, Muscat or Doha actually run. And the middlemen platforms often charged high commissions that quietly ate into the margins of the very businesses they claimed to serve.

The insight that became WAJ was simple to say and hard to build: service businesses in the region did not need a dozen disconnected apps. They needed one operating layer that runs the whole business and knows the customer.

The obstacle: fragmentation was the real competitor

The hardest part of the WAJ founder story is not a single dramatic setback  it is the size of the problem itself. Assem was not trying to beat one competitor. He was trying to replace a dozen half-solutions that every salon and clinic owner had already glued together: a booking app here, a point-of-sale device there, a customer list in a phone, an accountant working from paper receipts, and a marketing effort that lived entirely in one overworked manager’s head.

Convincing an owner to trust a single platform with all of that is a matter of proof, not promises. Every feature had to work on day one, and it had to come with in-country support that understood how these businesses actually operate. Building WAJ’s all-in-one platform meant getting bookings, POS, CRM, client records, marketing and accounting to behave as one system  not six systems in a trench coat.

The heart of it: turning a customer list into a CRM that grows revenue

If there is one part of the platform that captures Assem’s thinking, it is the CRM. Most salons and clinics do not lose customers because the haircut or the treatment was bad  they lose them because nobody followed up. The client who came in twice and then vanished, the birthday that went unnoticed, the loyal regular who was never rewarded: every one of those is revenue leaking out of a business that was too busy to notice.

WAJ was built to close that gap

Instead of a static list of phone numbers, WAJ’s CRM and loyalty tools turn every visit into data the business can act on. Each client gets a complete profile  full visit and treatment history, preferences, spending patterns and contact details  so staff greet returning customers by name and know exactly what they had last time. On top of that sits automated marketing and a built-in loyalty and rewards program: automatic reminders that cut no-shows, win-back messages to clients who have not booked in a while, and points and rewards that give regulars a reason to keep coming back. For the owner, the reporting layer ties it all together, showing retention, repeat-visit rates and which campaigns actually brought people through the door.

In other words, WAJ does not just help a business take bookings  it helps that business keep the customer it worked so hard to win. For service businesses where a single loyal client is worth thousands over the years, that is the difference between surviving and compounding.

The extra effort: assembling operators, not just engineers

To pull it off, Assem built a team that mirrored the problem. Rather than hiring only coders, he brought together operators people who had lived inside MENA’s tech and service companies and knew where the real friction was. The team behind WAJ now spans Dubai and Amman, covering engineering, sales, operations and marketing, and it is anchored in three principles that still define the company:

    One system, not six

Bookings, POS, CRM, marketing and accounting live in a single platform, so nothing falls through the cracks between tools.AI woven in, not bolted on. Intelligence lives inside the workflows themselves, rather than being added later as a gimmick.Built by operators. People who have actually run and scaled products in the region make the product decisions  including deep local support for how businesses in MENA really work. That combination is what turned WAJ from an idea into infrastructure. Owners did not have to abandon the way they worked; they got a single place where the way they already worked finally fit.

The result: 500+ businesses and a move into healthcare

Today WAJ serves more than 500 salons, spas, barbershops and clinics across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, Qatar and the wider GCC  replacing fragmented tools and high-commission middlemen with one unified system. It is the kind of quiet, compounding traction that comes from solving a problem operators feel every single day.

In April 2026, the company took its biggest step yet by carrying that philosophy into healthcare with Nabd, WAJ’s AI clinical system. Nabd brings clinical dashboards, interactive body maps, lab and prescription management, nutrition planning, full patient history and an AI clinical assistant into the same unified experience. As Assem put it: “We built Nabd because clinic owners across the Gulf were managing appointments in one system, writing clinical notes in another, and handling prescriptions on paper.” It is the WAJ thesis applied to a new field — take the fragmentation out, and give operators one place to run everything.

    In the founder’s own words

Assem is candid about why WAJ exists at all:

“I spent years building technology for some of the region’s biggest companies, but the businesses I kept thinking about were the small ones  the salon owner juggling five different apps, the clinic manager still chasing appointments on paper. I started WAJ because I was tired of watching great operators lose customers and margin to tools that were never built for the way they actually work. My bet was simple: give a service business one system that runs everything and truly remembers its customers, and it won’t just survive  it will compound.”

What founders can take from the WAJ story

The WAJ founder story is a case study in a specific kind of advantage: building for how a business actually runs, end to end. Assem Ammar did not win by launching one more booking app  he won by unifying the whole operation and putting the customer relationship at the center of it. Bookings get a business its next appointment; a CRM gets the next ten years of appointments from the same client.

For any founder, the lesson lands cleanly: the biggest opportunity is often not a brand-new product category, but the one everyone assumes is already “solved”  and then solving it as one coherent system instead of a pile of disconnected tools.
